Border security refers to the combination of physical barriers, surveillance technology, personnel and policies used to control the movement of people and goods across a country's borders. In the U.S., it focuses primarily on the nearly 2,000-mile southern border with Mexico and official ports of entry.

Taiwan Relations Act
A 1979 U.S. law that governs unofficial relations between the United States and Taiwan after Washington shifted formal diplomatic recognition to the People's Republic of China. It commits the U.S. to provide Taiwan with defensive arms and to maintain the capacity to resist coercion against the island.

The Great Depression
A severe worldwide economic downturn that began with the U.S. stock market crash of October 1929 and lasted through the late 1930s, marked by mass unemployment, bank failures, and sharp drops in output and prices.
